The Iliad records some important events during the final year of the Trojan War. The Odyssey concerns the journey of Odysseus after the war. Many scholars regard the purpose of the Odyssey as being to show that it is the journey (of life?) which is important rather than the destination. To tell the story of the Trojan War.

The reason why he wrote the Iliad was to show that honor, pride, and revenge (The Honor Society) caused war and death, which meant nothing at the end. As a humanity, he wanted us to think with reason (Shame Society) because it did not lead to war, it lead to justice and duty, which means a lot more than glorified honor and pride.

There are also lesser themes of obeying the gods and having courage.

The Iliad was an epic poem that recounted the war between the Greeks and the Trojans. An alternate name for "Troy" was "Ilium," and in Greek the word "Iliad" roughly translates to "The Story of Troy."

He was a poet and a storyteller of the oral tradition. His writing where in the way that he recited the poems to a small or a big audience. As to why did he recite him in such way. Well, it's poetry. That's how poetry is told. But his similes and other such methods of writings he adopted where because of his personal way of telling stories and what he had learned from other poets of his time.
