"Q" ratings are numbers between 0-100 that are assigned to actors and celebrities by the Hollywood studios to determine their level of fame and recognizability. These numbers matter because studios fund movies and television shows based on the projected amount of money they will get back from their investment. For example, if you spend $2 million dollars on a movie starring Julia Roberts, you will likely make back a minimum of $50 million, because Julia Roberts has an extremely high "Q" (for quotient). However, if you made the exact same movie, but put an unknown actor in the Julia Roberts role the odds are far less likely that you will make back your initial investment, let alone $50 million. Therefore, numbers are assigned to actors to determine how much value they bring to a film or show. (Julia Roberts would be a 100.)
