He was unpopular because he was a Catholic. He also had strong beliefs regarding the Divine Right of Kings, and what he thought should be the scope of authority of Absolute Princes (kings) who ruled under that right. These beliefs made many uneasy. For example, he believed that Parliament should be considered nothing more than an advisory committee to the king.
