Why did King Louis XIV declare New France a royal colony?

At first he wanted a trading colony because there was a huge amount of fur in New France. Because of that France started to become wealthier than the other European countries for example the UK,Spain and Germany. Because of that the other countries wanted the fur in New France. If King Louis XIV did not make a settlement colony he would probably lose his colony because he would not have enough people to protect the colony for example the British took over in 1663 because king Louis XIV could not bring enough settlers in to New France. King Louis XIV was one of the most important monarchs in Canadian history, and his reign was the longest. In 1663 he made New France a royal province, the first step in Canada's evolution from colony to independent kingdom. In his reign he also fostered the social and economic development of Canada. The King was also one of the great patrons of literature and art, established many academies and wrote his memoirs. The Canadian Royal Heritage Trust Archives were named in his honour to recognise the contribution of this great Canadian king.
