Throughout the series, co-creator Larry David threatened to quit myriad times, for reasons relating to stress and personal issues of that nature, which suggested that Seinfeld could come to an end. After several successful years when the ninth season approached, he was not alone in wanting to be finished with the show. Jerry Seinfeld along with other participants in the series felt that the episodes were getting too ridiculous, and the original purpose was dying. The network offered substantial pay raises to continue with a tenth season, but Jerry would not accept, insisting that it was time to bring the series to an end.
David left Seinfeld on friendly terms after the 7th season, reportedly because he worried about his episodes losing their comedic and storytelling edge.
He returned to write the series finale in 1998, two years later.
