Laura started writing books to record for children how much life had changed in a short time. She began writing in the time just after her mother and Mary had died within a few years of each other, and this seems to have prompted a desire to reflect and record their times together. In addition, there was a need to financially support herself and Almanzo, as he could no longer work the farm as he once had. She was to comment after the writing of her first book that she had discovered during the process that she had lived a very interesting life. She also wrote the books to show the progress of moving across America The only thing not included in her main books, is about how she went backward a little bit because Pa had a job in a hotel. She did not write that one because it did not fit in with her theme.

Her first attempts were rejected by publishers in the 1920's. However, she did not give up and continued to work on it until several years later in 1932, she was successful in getting the beloved â??The Little House On The Prairieâ?? series published.

Laura had been writing longer than even big fans of the Little House books are aware. Around the time of the First World War, Laura began writing for newspapers throughout the midwest. She wrote a column called, "As A Farm Woman Thinks," which was very popular.

She was inspired to write a book, in the early 1930s through memories of her Pa. She loved the stories he told her and her sister Mary when they were growing up, and felt that other children should be able to enjoy them, too.

Laura always said that "Little House in the Big Woods" was the only book she planned to write, but schoolchildren wrote to her by the thousands, asking "what happened next?" She decided to answer them with another book, and another, until she had written all eight of the books now called the Little House series.
