The reasons for Mussolini allying with Hitler was that he could see that Hitler was going to start a war and probily take over the world and he did not want to miss out on the rewards of being on the winning side. The effects it had on Mussolini was that he was veiwed very highly around the world for re-stabilising the Italian govenment so allying with Hiler decreased his popularity with other world leaders

What would have happened if Italy had supported the Allies in World War 2?

That is a very interesting question. Please remember that Mussolini started the fascist movement in the early 20s. So this question has really never been poised or given much thought. If Italy had joined the Allies, then Hitler and his generals would have had to position troops in southern Germany/former Austria to cover them. During the Czechoslovakia situation Mussolini did move parts of his army to Germany's southern border, and the Czech PM was hoping that Mussolini might help to stare the Germans down. This is one of the many reasons that the Pact of Steel was formed. Hitler did not want to have to squabble with Mussolini. They were both dictatorships, so he did not fear the Italians going over to the Allies.

What was the pact between Hitler and Mussolini called?

In 1939 Hitler and Stalin signed a friendship pact, and promised that they would not fight. But shortly after that Hitler broke the pact.

What led to Mussolini's seeking an alliance with Nazi Germany?

Basically, Mussolini had originally disliked Hitler when he took control of Germany, and came close to going to war with Germany in 1934 when Nazis assassinated the dictator who ruled Austria (the Austrian dictator was friends with Mussolini; additionally, Italy didn't want Germany to annex Austria and become too powerful). Although Mussolini disliked Hitler, Hitler greatly admired Mussolini and even tried to copy things that Mussolini had done. However, Italy wanted to build an empire, and picked a fight with Ethiopia, which led to a full invasion. Hitler was the only world leader who expressed support for Italy in their war; all other major countries condemned it. Mussolini finally began to like Hitler; he relented and did not try to stop Hitler from annexing Austria in 1938. Eventually Germany and Japan began working on an alliance that would fight against Communist aggression (Japan lost a very short war against the Soviet Union and wanted allies in case of another war with them). Italy also joined the alliance; eventually Italy and Germany would form the "Pact of Steel", officially bonding the countries together in World War II, which started about four months later.

How was Mussolini insane?

He had extreme paranoia and he supported hitler because he feared he would threaten his power.

Why did Musollini follow Hitler in World War 2?

Mussolini signed a pact with Hitler to be an ally. He did NOT think of it as he was following after Hitler. Both countries had a form of fascist government. For a long time, before the war and a year into the war, the two Dictators were equal in many ways in their actions and egotism. Mussolini came to power in 1922, many years before Hitler did in 1933. In June 1934, Hitler traveled to Italy to visit Mussolini. Hitler, dressed in civilian clothes, was dazzled by Mussolini who wore a splendid uniform and showed off his air and sea power. This inspired Hitler to begin wearing his uniform and visor cap. Even the Nazi stiff-arm salute was taken from Mussolini and his Blackshirts. Mussolini was fluent in German but it seems that every time they met, Hitler would take control of the conversation. So, in a sense, Mussolini did relent control to Hitler. By 1941, Italy had fought several years in North Africa and was tired of war. Their Army was worn out and needed new equipment. That made Mussolini "look up" to Hitler for aide. Invasion of Sicily?

It contributed to the Allied Victory because the allies now had a route from the South, through a thin strip of land of Austria, and into Germany.

Who is the worst dictator ever?

I would say either Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, or Castro.

How was Italy dependent on Nazi Germany?

Answer Italy invaded Abyssinia in 1935 and continued to fight in North Africa for several years. Mussolini had sent troops to fight in the Spanish Civil War. On his own initiative, he invaded Albania in April 1939. Mussolini hoped that his alliance with Germany would make his country stronger. He wanted Germany to provide needed raw materials to rebuild his army and make improvements within his country. The German and Italian ministers met in May 1939 and worked out an alliance that was agreed to by Hitler and Mussolini. Hitler promised Mussolini that he would not start a war for 3 years and would help Italy rebuild its army and infrastructure. Two weeks later, Germany invaded Poland and the war was begun. From that day on, the Italians needed Germany's assistance to fight in North Africa and the naval battles in the Mediterranean. By August 1943, the Allies had capture Sicily and the Italian people were tired of war. At a meeting of the Grand Council on 16 July, the Fascist leaders asked Mussolini to step down from power, which he did. However, Hitler still needed him and placed Mussolini as head of the Fascist government in northern Italy---however, Hitler was the one who ran the army that continued to resist the Allies for 2 more years. How did Benito Mussolini influence Adolf Hitler?

Benito and Adolf did not like each other but they respected each others power, certainly Benito would have been interested in gaining more power. In 1938, Germany occupied Austria in the Anschluss (forbidden by Versailles). Hitler did not forewarn Mussolini about what he was going to do and this upset Mussolini's belief that he was an equal partner. However, there was nothing Mussolini could do about the Nazi occupation of Austria and it was clear from 1938 on that Mussolini was definitely the minor partner in the relationship.

When did fascism start in Italy?

The early to mid 1930's when Benito Mussolini came to power.
