Because it was hard to govern
They split because of a) general cultural differences and b) there was a dispute with the Proprietors (guys who owned the state). They DID NOT split because South Carolina wanted slavery and wanted to be a Confederate state and North Carolina wanted to be a Union state. The country, being the United States, was not even formed yet and would not be formed for another 64 years (the Carolinas officially and legally split in 1712, yet South Carolina became it's own legal entity and a royal colony in 1719).
Because northern Carolina realized they were being held back by the dummies in southern Carolina. It persists today.
Neither colony was happy with its proprietors.
They had differenet religious views.
They had different economic views.

Carolina never really split. The original colonies were always refered to as the carolinas, and were formed at the same time indepentedently.
In 1710, due to disputes over governance, the Carolina colony began to split into North Carolina and South Carolina. The latter became a crown colony in 1729. It had nothing to do with the Civil war as both Carolinas exhisted before the War and both sides joined the South

Originally both Carolinas were together. However it was too hard to govern such a large area because it took so long by walking, horse riding or ship to enforce laws that the land was split into North and South Carolina.
It was split off, so it did not vote or decide to split. Charles I had originally established the colony of Carolina that contained North and South Carolina, Tenessee and Georgia. In 1729 the area was divided into four colonies by the British, mostly for administrative reasons.
The five southern colonies are : Georgia, south Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. Maryland and Virginia are also called Chesapeake colonies.
