As his initial attempt to achieve enlightenment he became an ascetic (a person who leads a life of contemplation and rigorous self-denial for religious purposes). He realized that his previous life of comfort had led him nowhere. His thinking was that without the pleasures to distract him, his mind would focus on the true meaning of existence.
Unfortunately this did not work as all that a hungry and cold person thinks of is the hunger and cold.
He eventually realized that neither luxury or deprivation lead to enlightenment, only the middle way of "enough" provides the health existence that leads to improvement.

Because this was the recommended way for spiritual people at the time. He later decided that starving himself did not lead to the end of suffering, and so he came up with "The Middle Way", avoiding the two extremes of luxury and self-mortification.

The ferryman in Siddhartha is named Vasudeva. He is a wise and enlightened character who helps guide Siddhartha on his spiritual journey. Vasudeva lives a simple and content life by the river and imparts valuable wisdom to Siddhartha.
