He didn't. There are a lot of myths around Stalin's legacy, mostly invented to discredit Marxism-Leninism. Some of the Old Bolsheviks did end up being traitors, some even in collaboration with the Nazis (an extremely anti-Bolshevik group) and were executed for it, as it was a time of war, and that is a typically acceptable punishment for treason in most countries. However, Lazar Moiseyevich Kaganovich and Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Molotov are two Old Bolsheviks who outlived Stalin, and even in the face of Khrushchev's lies and murderous revisionist polices remain faithful to Stalin and the ideology of Marxism-Leninism until their deaths.

When did Joseph Stalin come to power in Russia?

Essentially, Stalin had total control of the Soviet Union by the end of 1928.During the last year of Lenin's life in 1923, Stalin, Lev Kamenov and Grigori Zinoviev ruled as a triumvirate and continued to do so after Lenin died. Over the next few years Stalin squeezed both of them out and in 1927 had both expelled from the Communist Party. For awhile he shared some power with others but by the end of 1928 he was essentially in full control but still with some opposition from some of the old BolsheviksThe only obstacle to total control was that some of the old Bolsheviks still remained and were able to at least criticize some things Stalin was doing. Stalin got rid of all of them in the Great Purges of 1936-1938 and finally had no one left that wasn't loyal to him entirely and thus had absolute control. At the beginning of WWII

How did Stalins policies impact the soviet union?

It basically killed all the Old Bolsheviks that could remember Lenin, and allowed Russia to be ruled by the younger Bolsheviks who had been taught to follow Stalin. Alternative: Stalin's terror affect not too much population at all. Many people mix Stalin's terror with anti-criminal processes. For usual Russian people, Stalin's terror was no more than newspaper header.

Why did Leon Trotsky lose the the leadership contest?

There were several reasons. Trostsky was a late convert to Bolshevism and was not trusted by many of the old Bolsheviks. many old Bolsheviks considered Trotsky to be too much of an intellectual for their liking. Many disliked him for being Jewish despite the fact that many Bolsheviks were themselves Jewish. Grigori Zinoviev, himself a Jew, hated Trotsky so much he joined with Stalin and Lev Kamenev (also Jewish) to form a three party ruling block to oust Trotsky from power. Another reason is that Stalin, as General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party as well as Commissar of other departments in government held the loyalty of many people he had installed in government and party positions. Trotsky had few allies in power.

Who had political power after Lenin?

Political power did not go to Joseph Stalin right after Lenin died. The government was run by a triumvirate of Joseph Stalin, Grigory Zinoviev and Lev Kamenev for a number of years. Stalin managed to get rid of Zinoviev and Kamenev and took sole power in 1928. He did not become the dictator that he is remembered as until 1932, because the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party still had enough old Bolsheviks on it who could have voted Stalin out and replaced him. Stalin got rid of them too leaving mostly his own appointees and others loyal to him on the Politburo and Central Committee. He also then had full control of the OGPU, the secret police, who could eliminate anyone at anytime as Stalin desired with no objections from the Party.
