What was the purpose of king Tutankhamun's death mask?

He didn't wear a golden mask in life. Pharaohs often have a golden funerary mask which was placed over the mummy's head to protect him in the afterlife. It also represents the Egyptian ideal that the Pharaoh's skin was gold. They had golden finger and toe cuffs that served a similar purpose.

It was a deathmask or a burial mask, if you refer to the legendary mask of tutenkhamun burial masks have been used by many different cultures over thousands of years, for many different purposes, for the egyptians it would've been used to protect the pharaoh from evil spirits during its transition to the afterworld, it is unlikely that the mask would've even been produced until after his death
