Why should it be? It's ridiculous that this subject has generated so much buzz. Didn't our momma's teach us that it's what's inside that counts? From a character perspective, I think his weight gain can certainly be explained by the recent events in his personal (loss of mother, brother, mentor...) and professional (2 high stress under cover jobs, suspension...) experiences. Overall I find he looks somewhat haggard and tired, so to me the weight gain is a natural compliment to this appearance, and seems like a quite natural development. From a personal perspective, why does it matter?!?! Weight does not affect his ability to perform on the show (he never was a chase and wrestle kind of detective). Nor does Vincent's weight detract from his understated yet powerful acting gifts. Do pounds even matter in the grand sacred scheme of Vincent D'Onofrio's pursuits, talents and performances? I think NOT.
