Carlo Collodi created the story of Pinocchio in 1883, but failed to copyright anything about the character in the US, leaving the idea in the public domain. Disney was therefore able to use the character without having to pay the Collodi estate anything at all. Disney corporation has always maintained they shared a portion of the profits with the Collodis, but has failed to provide any proof.
