Because Buddy Holly wanted to stop or at least tour considerbly less, and because he moved to New York to try writing more elaborate and different styles of music. Buddy was the first rock n roller to add strings and horn arrangements to rock style music. The Crckets continued to tour without him.
Some time in 1958. Their manager Norman Petty wasn't exactly a "straight shooter" when it came to his clients and money and caused a bit of a riff with the group. Buddy allowed the members of the Crickets to own the rights to name while he went on his solo career mostly in New York City.
Because he died in a small plane crash along with fellow musicians Ritchie Valens and the J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson and the pilot, Roger Peterson on Feb 3 1959.
