1) Wheat Gluten is cheaper than meat, and is essentially a "nutritional filler" because it is a plant protein. China isn't the only one that did this.

2) Wheat gluten didn't cause the most famous problems with Chinese pet foods, it was the industrial by-product melamine that was substituted for (some) wheat gluten, because it is essentially free and looks like gluten in basic tests. Unfortunately, in high doses or in sensitive animals it also causes kidney failure.

Are dog bones affected by pet food recall?

If you are talking about the smoked dog bones you can buy singularly no. If you are talking about dog biscuits in a box as long as they don't have wheat gluten in them then they are fine. Check the labels and if it has wheat gluten don't buy it. Ask a reputable pet store (larger chain) what dog bones are safe.

What pet food company does NOT use Menu Foods to produce any of their wet canned pet foods?

Anything from March on is safe to feed your pets, but I can imagine you are like me and still don't trust what you hear. There needs to be better regulations regarding dog products and that includes treats. I live in British Columbia, Canada and now use "GO" (no wheat gluten used) and also the brand "Chicken Soup" same thing. Anything WITHOUT wheat gluten is OK to feed your dog or cat. Just read the labels or phone your vets and ask their advice.Orijen is good. most cats love the 6 fish flavor. ingredients are made in there facility.

Is your dog allergic to his food?

It's always wise to consult your Veterinarian when your pet's health is in question. However, the answer is "yes" - many dogs actually ARE allergic to their dog food. All too many commercial pet foods are made with inferior ingredients. You can easily read on the internet about the Five D's of pet food which refers to the fact that the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) still, to this day, permit pet food manufacturers to use meat rendered from Dead, Diseased, Dying, Disabled and/or Drugged animals.Beyond the ugliness of the Five D's in pet food, many major brands of pet food include corn, wheat and soy cereal grains. While these are used by major pet food manufacturers to meet the protein levels by the AAFCO as cheaply as possible, these grains are highly indigestible to most dogs and are known allergens. Corn is reported to be the #3 causing allergen in cats and dogs.Avoid pet foods that include the following ingredients on the label: corn, ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, whole grain corn, ground whole wheat, whole grain sorghum, wheat flour and others.By-Products are also indigestible protein sources and may include animal hide, bones, bills and feet. These ingredients can also introduce contaminants to a pet food. Finally, chemical preservatives can cause pets physical distress. BHA, BHT and Ethoxyquin are common chemical preservatives found in many pet foods that can cause serious harm to your pet, including liver failure.Fortunately, there are healthy, reliable pet food manufacturers on the market today who make all natural, chemical-free pet food from high quality, human grade ingredients. You may be interested to watch a free online video offered by one such pet food manufacturer at www.BestFoodForYourPet.com.In any case, be sure to look at the ingredients used to make your pet's food. What should you feed labrador retrievers?

Any high-quality dog food is fine--whether dry, canned, or mixed. Try to avoid grocery store brands and shop in specialty pet food stores if you can afford it. Whatever you buy, make sure that the food does not contain any of these words in the ingredients: wheat, gluten, byproducts, or fillers. Labs have a tendency to overeat and get fat, and most dog food packaging will have recommendations that result in too much food for most Labs--so you have to adjust your dog's food amount based on the dog's weight.
