A few decades ago, colorists used to actually paint with water color on the finished inked comic book page (usually transparent Dr. Martin inks). Theses finished pages were shipped off to a printed who provides a color key to a four color press. Back in the 70's and before, colors were limited and looked pretty inacurate on the then used newsprint paper. Now a days, coloring and printing are done digitally on much better quality paper.

i think its because more people started to relize what comics were, and that if more and more people are going to read them in the daily paper that they should have an affect .
