The Israel was already in turmoil before the Declaration of Independence on May 14, 1948. Jewish Militias had been fighting with Arab Militias as early as September of 1947. Many of the Arab States, however, threatened Israel that to declare independence (and therefore seek international legitimacy) would result in them declaring war on Israel, intensifying the already brutal guerrilla campaigns. Deciding that they would rather be recognized and be able to treat with other nations than to exist in eternal fear, Israel chose to declare independence. The Arabs made good on their threat.
The state of Israel
That depends entirely on your perspective of the situation. There is the opinion that Israel has been the unwitting recipient of conflict since its inception and that all it wants is for the conflict to cease. There is of course the even more fatuous claim that every shred of violence in the Middle East is traceable back to Israel. What is clear is that while Israel has certainly had a strong hand in the conflicts it participated in, it takes two to tango.
The United States recognized the State of Israel relatively soon after Israel's Declaration of Independence. However, a true alliance did not exist between the countries until after the Six Day War of 1967. Prior to this, the United States enforced an arms embargo over the region.
In three and a half years, the Jewish population of Israel, which was 650,000 at the state's founding, was more than doubled by an influx of about 688,000 immigrants.
The conflict between Israel and Gaza was caused due to Hamas being elected into power in Gaza in 2005. In Hamas' charter, it calls for the destruction of the Jewish state (Israel). Israel and America, in trying to get the Palestinians to the negotiating table, mistakenly withdrew from Gaza as a goodwill gesture, but didn't expect Hamas to get elected. Hamas is the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, and as such vehemently opposed to any nation, anywhere in the world, which has any kind of rule other than Shari'ah (Islamic law). The conflict between Israel and Gaza is no different to the conflict and violence caused by Muslims in India, Nigeria, Kenya, Somalia, Thailand, the Philippines etc.
