she went insane because guilt took over her and the fact that she was seeing blood stains on her hands ("out damned spot, out i say"), enhanced her guilty conscience. This is ironic as during the first 2 acts of the play, she dominates over Macbeth, and is the controller. But later on, guilt surpasses her ambition which results in her insanity, and then suicide.
Lady Macbeth was struggling with the limitations of being a woman in a patriarchal society and had a thirst for fame and power. Once she was aware of the predictions made by the three witches and had seen some of their prediction come true in her husbands promotion she craved the power that had been promised her. However, she had to manipulate her husband into doing things rather than doing them herself. She was fustrated by lack of control over her own destiny and dismayed at what she percieved to be a weak, unmanly husband who lacked the drive to take matters into his own hands. She asks to be removed of all the caring characteristics associated with womanhood which would cause her remorse after the murder and yet she is confronted with a husband who is wracked with guilt after the event. She attempts to coach him into how and what to think about the event but is unsucsesful in trying to manipulate his conscience after the event. Thus it becomes apparent that she has no control over her destiny and she becomes increasingly insane.
The Warlord ( gangster had not yet been coined) was certainly unstable and given to unbridled political ambition. small wonder Polanski"s film version had him strongly identified with Charles Manson, and the witches, Manson"s gang- the line about Dagger of the Mind -to Polanski, not Shakespeare, could refer to (Droggs!)
At the end of Shakespeare's Macbeth, Lady Macbeth goes mad with guilt. In Act 5, Scene 1, she dreams of the blood on her hands that cannot be washed off. The blood is a symbol of her guilt and her troubled sleepwalking reveals insight to her descent into madness. "Give me your hand, what's done cannot be undone."
In Act 3 Scene 4, Macbeth behaved strangely at his post-coronation banquet at the royal palace of Forres. The reason was the ghostly appearance of Banquo, whose throat Macbeth just had had slit by three hired murderers. Banquo's ghost showed up, to unhinge Macbeth. Lady Macbeth tried to cover for her husband's odd behavior. She described it as momentary fits that had plagued him since youth.
I believe that something went awry in the nursery, and she never got over it. She hints that she has given birth, but no explanation is given for the absence of her children. Perhaps she is the model of the Renaissance aristocrat guilty of infanticide. It cannot be abortion, because she claims that she has "given suck."
She was a power crazed by the idea her hubby could be king and wanted it straight away.

What goes wrong is that Macbeth is driven crazy by guilt, becomes a paranoid loner, and wrecks the dinner parties by screaming at ghosts nobody can see. As she says: "Nought's had, all's spent, when desire's had without content". In other words it has turned to ashes in her mouth. Worse, Macbeth's paranoia and craziness has made him do things which will make people suspect him. This makes Lady Macbeth worry constantly that the murders will be brought home to them, which ironically makes her crazy and makes her spill the beans while sleepwalking.
