It was too far to trade with other Vikings, and his people were constantly being attacked by Native Americans.
From the Sagas we can reasonably conclude that Leif was trying to confirm the voyage of Bjarni Herjulfsson. Bjarni was from Iceland, sailing to Greenland (Leif was from Greenland) in 986AD when he was blown off course pass Greenland.
Bjarni had excellent navigation skills and once the skies cleared he knew that he was well east of Greenland but could see land and forest. Bjarni did notgo ashore, instead he returned to Iceland and told everybody about his trip.
Leif was the son of Erik the Red. The same guy that settled Greenland. Now you've gotta think Leif was under some pressure to live up to his Dad's reputation, well maybe not the murder part. So when he hears of Bjarni and his trip he buys Bjarni boat and retraces the voyage, discovering North America for the Vikings.
He also laid the groundwork for Christopher Columbus. Chris belonged to a group of navigators who, 500yrs later, used information about Leif's voyages to once again discover North America.
So why did Leif go? Some say he was just out for a day sail and got lost. I say he was trying to prove himself, likely to his Dad, or maybe he just thought it would be cool to see what was there. We will never know for sure.
He was searching for new lands to colonize.
He wanted to colonize land so he found this land and was going to colonize it

He had been exiled from iceland and was searching for a new home for his family.
