The US, Canada, and Western Europe formed NATO in order to counteract the perceived threat from the Soviet Union, who had the world's largest and strongest army which was sprawled across Eastern Europe. This move prompted Stalin to form a similar alliance system in Eastern Europe called the Warsaw Pact.
NATO comes to us as "the North Atlantic Treaty Organization" in 1945 after the war in Europe, communist Russia kept most of its communist territories as part of the greater USSR
Under the USSR they formed the Warsaw Compact which said that all members (communist countries) would join efforts in case of a war brought on by the capitalists in Europe and North America.
NATO was the Capitalist group made up of non communist europe, North America, and their colonies. Soon after Japan also joined. Even though it says North Atlantic, it eventually encompassed most capitalist nations. But in the 40s' and 50's many areas were too unstable to include in the pact such as Africa, the Middle East, or SOuth America. So NATO was formed to litlerally combat communism if any of their members were infsltrated or attacked by a communist nation (or the Warsaw pact)
they wanted to start fresh
