[1] Slaves often didn't end up on plantations with other enslaved family members, friends, or nationals. Blood, emotional and national ties weren't respected. So a slave couldn't count on knowing the same language as other slaves at the same plantation. [2] The plantation owners weren't interested in learning or preserving African languages. [3] So slaves had to focus their energies on becoming proficient in the language of their new country: English.
