The great majority of Germans migrating to the U.S. both before and after the Civil War did so for economic reasons, though there were some who fled or migrated for political reasons. It is noteworthy that the some of the poorest regions in German (in the period c. 1700-1880 - such as Württemberg) contributed an exceptionally high number of migrants to America. They were unhappy with economic changes in Germany.
