I am not sure that is a correct statement. Several battles took place in the West: Ft. Henry, Ft. Donelson, Shiloh, Vicksburg, New Orleans, Mobile Bay, Corinth, Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain, Chickamauga, Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Savannah, Nashville, Murfreesboro, Stones River. That's a lot.

I assume this is the American Civil War. If not, ask the question again more specifically. Mostly (but not entirely) east of the Mississippi River to the coast, and South of Gettysburg and North of Florida.
