The reason Russia told everyone was that it wanted Chechnya to rejoin it. The Chechen people were all against it so this forced Russia to invade them. But the reason many people say, is that it wasn't for nationalist reasons but for economic reasons, Chechnya had lots of oil resources and pipelines within it.
