THE British were trying to capture the port of Baltimore after burning Washington DC, the White House, the capitol , and many of the surrounding areas. The previous year the United States declared war on Canada and won the war against the British at York. Many of the governmental building in york

were set ablaze. The war ended between England and France when Napoleon was defeated, allowing England to concentrate and advance the war in the Americas. In retaliation; for the burning of York, the British attacked and burned Washington DC , fought and won the battle of Bladensburg, and Baltimore was next; but lost the battle of Plattsburg( also known as the battle of Lake Champlain) Located between Vermont, New York, and the border of Canada- This battle was the decisive and the final victory of the war of 1812
