Because they lived in the Andes mountains so what they did is that they carved out some of the mountain and started planting : maize (corn) , beans , cacao ( chocolate). They used maize to make tortillas and they also plant avocados. The Maya would grind them on a grinding stone . Mayas cooked it on clay called '' camali" . Mothers would teach their daughters how to cook. Steamed foods were tamales , there shaped dough balls sometimes add: beans , chiles , or meat and put it in the center of the tamale and wrap it in maize leaves and put into a large stem pot. Also they planted tomatoes and squash.
