Emperor Hadrian wanted to protect the empire. The wall was there to protect the north of England from raids by Scottish tribes. The Romans were unable to conquer the Scots, so they built a wall to keep them out.
There was also another border wall, further north, built by Emperor Antonius, but it 'only' lasted for about 150 years. Hadrian's wall lasted for around 500 years, and many parts of it still exist today.
