Hernan Cortez was a Spanish explorer who came to The New World in the 1500s as one of the first conquistadors. Cortez ultimately destroyed the Aztec civilization and claimed the land for the Spanish.
All military expeditions led by Spanish conquistadors (1529-1534) failed, but allowed them to find that California was a peninsula, and that it was lightly inhabited by nomadic tribes known as pericu, guaycura and cochimi. The "conquest" of Baja California was performed by jesuit missionaries, who slowly but steadily, began the conversion of the nomadic population between 1690 and 1767 through a network of missions, some of which stand to this day.
