Why did the US end island hopping?

During World War II, in the Pacific Theater of Operations, American strategy focused upon 'island-hopping' as a key to victory against the Japanese enemy. The purpose of this strategy was to bypass (while also isolating) enemy strongholds, focusing instead upon carefully selected islands of significance. Once taken, these islands served as forward bases for the next set of 'island-hopping,' with each move bringing the Allied forces closer to the home-islands of Japan -- and final victory.

The US adopted the Island Hoping policy in WWII so that they could push back the Japanese front and that way the Japanese didn't have supplies so close to the Americans and it would take them longer to get needed supplies if they ever did in fact strike again on America. And this way the Americans gained ground to work from as well. Also with the policy of Island Hoping the Japanese were less likely to attack the American Fleets from behind and it also resulted in less deaths for both sides because if the Americans just attacked the Capital directly than Japan's Pride and Wraith would be worse than ever and would almost be unstoppable because the Americans would had to have kill almost every person in Japan before they would have surrendered.

To isolate the Japanese troops and cut off their supply chain. The islands that we invaded had air fields that were strategically located for our heavy bombers to operate from. Since their range was not that far we needed to get them as close to Japan as possible.

Island hopping was a strategy used by the US and its Allies as they advanced through the Pacific Theatre of Operations in World War 2. It was not used in other Theatres of War, and when the war ended with the Japanese surrender the need for that strategy ended as well.
