Why did the US go to war with Germany?

America declared war on Germany in April of 1917, thus entered World War I as a formal combatant, mostly because of Germany's unrestricted submarine campaign. German submarines were sinking American ships despite the official neutrality of the U.S. Another factor was general American suspicion of Germany and sympathy towards Germany's opponents, the Allies, which had both increased tremendously as the war had progressed.

The Germans sank the British Lusitania, killing 128 Americans. The Germans offered aid to Mexico for an invasion of Texas. German unrestricted submarine warfare threatened East Coast ports. If the Allied Forces lost, they wouldn't be able to pay America back. The US entered the war as revenge, to secure their finances and so they could open coastal forts to defend cities.
