If we assume that the Earth is in the center of the solar system, then the math of predicting the path and the positions of the planets is extraordinarily difficult. It was even HARDER when the early astronomers, shackled as they were to the presumption that Aristotle knew something, that every celestial object traveled in circles.
They don't, and the assumptions that astronomers had to make to justify circular motion in the skies was what eventually brought everything down. Then Copernicus demonstrated that the math was easier if he presumed that the Sun was in the center, and Kepler proved that everything traveled in ELLIPTICAL rather than circular orbits. This further simplified the math.
Then Newton proposed the inverse-squares law for the relationship between gravity and distance, and everything fell into place.
