They passed the Alien Acts because in that time immigrants generally favored the Republican party (which is NOT the same Republican parts as we have today) so they tried to limit the amount of immigrants that would vote for Jefferson. They passed the Sedition Acts because now Jefferson's party would not be able to speak against the Federalist Party since the Sedition Acts wouldn't allow them to do so.
