Some fought out of genuine patriotism or nationalistic feeling. Some fought because they believed the enemy needed to be stopped. Some fought because they were drafted or conscripted into the service and had no choice. Some fought because everybody else was doing it, and they girls would look at them with disgust if they tried to stay home and did not go too. Men in combat units, then, as now and always, fought for their friends alongside them.
