It was just a filler episode set in an alternate reality. It's actually part of a 'Historical Arc' that was played outside of the regular series, (one was shown in between eps 253 and 254 for example) but some became actual episodes too.

So there's no more real reason than Oda having a bit of fun with his characters ('Chopperman' is another alternate reality arc).
