the poor when the ship was sinking were not allowed to be saved by a life boat instead it was the rich who got 'priority boarding' in this case. also they did not get nice accomodation. the rich got large and luxorious suites to stay in with a sitting room and everything but the poor got crammed into very small rooms with bunkbeds rather than large double beds with ornate coverings. the poor were not allowed into the reception area where the rich gathered for formal drinks and parties, instead they went below decks and helped themselves to barrels of ale and wore their everyday clothes.
If a greater percentage of the "rich" people had survived, there could be three possible reasons:
* Some of the crew, in spite of the circumstances, still felt a responsibility to the people who were deemed most important by the steamship company
* Most of the poorer passengers were well below decks (steerage) and had fewer ways to reach safety
* Disruptive infighting would have been more likely among those accustomed to "fighting" for the necessities of life
The largest single discrepancy was by gender, since women and children were given preference in the lifeboats. The biggest difficulty to survival was the frigid water (0° C), immersion causing death within minutes. Even some who made it to the lifeboats eventually succumbed.
The rich people were treated better and had better cabins unlike the poor people.
Almost every time the rich and poor are separated from each other. Same thing with today on ships and even on airplanes
