Well, the Titanic sank in the middle of the Atlantic, after being struck by and iceberg and being ignored by a passing ship. The captain ignored iceberg warnings and the engineering of the ship was flawed, so that counts as being strange.

For exhaust. Three were connected to boiler uptakes and the fourth was connected to the kitchen and the rest of the ship for ventilation.
