For a long time, there was a health problem with the dye used to color the M&M shells red. That ingredient issue had been resolved, however, and red M&Ms are back on the market again today and are fine to eat.
In 1995, Mars had a promotion where you could vote on which color M&M should replace the light brown ones. Purple, Pink or Blue where the options. Blue won. Thus, Purple and Pink were discontinued since they were only produced to promote the color change.
