A group in Congress lead by Henry Clay, known as the "War Hawks" wanted to invade Canada and make it part of the United States. The War Hawks were supported in the West and South.

IMPROVED ANSWER:

A band of young politicians, eager for war, were voted into the House of Representatives in 1810. Among them were Henry Clay of Kentucky and John C. Calhoun of South Carolina.

The War Hawks wanted to battle with Britain in the War of 1812, because of the following reason's:

1. The neutral United States was caught in a gigantic battle between the British and Napoleon of France.

2. Paper Blockades is the event in which Napoleon had seized as nearly as many American ships as the British. Nevertheless, American anger was directed mainly at the British. There were two reasons for this.

The first is that the British seizures took place on the high seas in violation, in the view of Americans as international law. Having no navy, Napoleon seized American ships only when they entered a French port, where they were under French law.

The second reason is that Britain's navy seized American vessels carrying cargoes belonging to France or Spanish merchants, even if the cargoes were non-military as tobacco or sugar.

3. The grievance of Americans was also the process known as impressment. This was the act of British ships kidnapping American sailors and forcing them to serve the British Navy. To recover deserters British ship captains would stop American vessels and "press" any sailors who could not prove that they were Americans.

4. The Chesapeake Affair of 1807, is when British soldiers were able to get aboard the American ship, to catch up with deserters and hanged them.

Following years of tension, the United States declared war on Great Britain in June of 1812. The War of 1812 was a conflict that really changed America. The outcome let citizens know that its country could protect against even the strongest military of all, Britain. Its outcome increased American patriotism and warned other countries not to mess with America.

There were many causes for this war between the two countries. The main cause for the war was the impressment of U.S. naval merchants, forcing them to serve in Britain's navy. The British were at war with Napoleon Bonaparte and his French empire, and this really affected issues with trade. This hurt the United States economy. First France closed all European ports to Britain and neutral ships that just traded with Britain. Britain, next required a special licensee in a British port before a ship could go to Europe. This was a problem for the United States. Hundreds of ships were captured and some of them were close to the United States shore. Approximately 6,000 sailers were captured and forced to serve.(citation) The British actually removed the impressment act already, but because of slow mail the war already started. It was outrageous to be treated like this.

Other tensions had been rising between Great Britain and the United States. The British were stirring up the Indians, giving them guns and telling them to attack and, kill frontier settlers and making them angry. These frontier settlers thought that with the British busy with France, they could easily steal a part of Canada. The British also wanted the Indians, to have their own state, which would help British fur trade. The United States wanted more respect from Britain! They wanted to be able to expand their country and have the Indian's farm the land. They didn't like how they were being bullied especially after they had fought for their freedom! After all this tension, President James Madison asked congress to declare war on England. They voted, and America was now at war with England. some people call the War of 1812 Mr. Madison's war.
