Why did writing develop?

In ancient Mesopotamia they created a form of writing called pictographs. They were usually pictures of something, and eventually this led to Cuneiform. Cuneiform were symbols, which were used to record things and another way of communication.

Writing began as a system of record keeping, to replace counting sticks and drawings. After basic writing was invented, people began to record stories and poems that had previously been passed down orally. The world's first written story is The Epic Of Gilgamesh from the Mesopotamians. Soon thereafter, writing and literature developed into an art form as well as recording data and providing communication between lands.

Ancient Mesopotamia invented writing to keep track of taxes, livstock, etc.
