In the election Hillary against trump, trump only won because we use a system called the electoral college. This means that people (who are called electors) are chosen to represent a state. The number of electors in each state will depend on the number of people in each state, with a minimum of three representatives (California has 55 while Wyoming has 3). Who ever has the most votes in that state wins the state and gets all of the electors in that state. At the end of the election the person with the most electors in their favor wins. This doesn't work so well. Say a state like California ends 51% to 49%. The person with 51% will get all of the electors on their side. (This happens in every state except Nebraska and Maine.) This is unfair because not every one is helping who they want to be president. If it was just counting up the total amount of votes to one person and comparing it to another person Hillary would have won.

What I am trying to say is Donald Trump won the electoral college vote and with it the election even though more people in the USA voted for Hillary Clinton.

Why did people think Donald Trump was going to lose the American election?

Most polling suggested Clinton would win. Trump also arguably lost all his debates against Clinton.

How many times in history has a candidate won the popular vote and won the electoral vote for president?

The last time it happened was in 2000, when George Walker Bush and Albert Arnold "Al" Gore, Jr. ran for President. Al Gore won the popular vote but had 266 electoral votes. George Walker Bush had 271 electoral votes and won after losing the popular vote.

What can people do prevent Donald Trump from becoming the President of the United States?

As for making Trump unelectable, what would destroy Trump is if he made a coherent policy prescription with actual statistics, an explanation of how he is going to convince the legislature to pass it, and clarify what elements will compose the "deal" he is going to make. Trump would lose a number of his supporters because in making such a detailed plan, Trump would have surrendered his alpha-male macho-ness and embraced a detailed and thoughtful campaign.

Did Katy Perry's feeble support cause Hillary to lose the election?

Katy Perry's support had no impact on Hillary Clinton's success in the election. Perry empathized with Hillary's loss; Ms. Perry has experienced her own sense of loss because she had family members who supported Donald Trump. Meanwhile, some celebrity gossip sites and humor websites have suggested that Perry may now leave the U.S. along with Miley Cyrus, Chelsea Handler, Madonna, Lena Dunham, Whoopi Goldberg, Samuel L. Jackson and many others who supported Hillary. However, although some celebrities may say they will leave the US if a certain candidate wins, most are making too much money here to really leave.

Can Trump win by a landslide and still lose the election due to electoral?

I don't know about getting a "landslide" popular vote and losing in the Electoral College, but candidates have won the popular vote then lost the electoral college. In 2000, George W Bush had 540,000 fewer votes than Al Gore, but won the Electoral College majority. When a candidate wins the popular vote of a state, all the electoral votes of that state go to that candidate. The more populous states have more electoral votes, but the count is not dependent upon the number of voters who show up at the polls. So the number of actual voters per Electoral College delegate can vary considerably depending upon the voter turnout of each state. To try to illustrate this, California could have only 3 voters show up with 2 voting for Hillary. All 55 Electoral College votes would go to Hillary. Texas (38), Arizona (11) and Idaho (4) could also each have 3 voters (2 Trump vs 1 Hillary) with a total of 6 going to Trump and 3 to Hillary. Between the 4 states, the popular vote would be 7 for Trump and 5 for Hillary, but the electoral vote be 55 for Hillary and vs 53 for Trump.

If Donald Trump should lose the presidential election what can the US Government do to make sure that he doesn't run for President again until he cleans up his act?

Nothing. Anyone who is eligible under the guidelines given by the US Constitution and federal laws may run for President. The federal government cannot otherwise forbid anyone from running for office. Nor should it- you (and I) may not like Trump, but he's constitutionally allowed to say and believe whatever he wants.

Why will Barack Obama lose?

I hope that America will see Obama for what he really is. I would have rather had Hillary Clinton as President then Obama. He is a liar and his wife is one of the biggest racial bigot on the liberal ticket. It appears that he and his supporters are making things worse rather then better for America.

Will Donald Trump be president?

This question is interesting because it was originally posted and answered in March 2011! Original answer: No. Donald Trump is a showboat who could not possibly win as president. His fiscal extravagance would not play well with the American people, and his catch phrase "You're fired" would be the subject of many attack ads. "We need a president to create not jobs, not destroy them." Particularly in an economy where many people have lost their jobs recently, and know others who have as well, Donald Trump does not have a chance. Newest response after 2016 Presidential election (edited): This is another individual who clearly did not understand the will of the people. He clearly miscalculated the millions and millions who were sick and tired of Obama politics. You can thank Hillary. There is no on else to blame for losing the election that Hillary supporters were so certain she would win than herself. The people clearly did not want anymore of what her and Obama have done to America....it's time to suck it up and "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN"!
