Most of the soldiers stationed at Pearl Harbor weren't actually in the bay when the Japanese attacked. It was on a Sunday. In fact, many of them were plain-clothes civilians when it all went down, and rushed as quickly as they could to defend the remaining vessels. Essentially, we were completely unprepared, with elementary defenses in place. If we had been a.) at war, and b.) operating on a week day, the story would be told a lot differently.
