Maybe it was because it was more formal not to smile, or maybe they did not really want to. I would say it really depends on the people in the picture.
I heard it was because it took so long to take the picture in those days which makes perfect sense because even today being forced to hold a smile for any length of time becomes uncomfortable.
Not only that, but not everybody had a camera like today. People were leery of the camera. Therefore people froze in front of this "new fandangle thing"

∙ 11y agoVictorians had only just uncovered suh a technology and the camera they had discovered waset there to take pretty pictures it was there to preserve memory. Also back then it was a very formal time where looking smart was key for the upper class. I'd imagine they thought smiling looked too stupid on the limited film they had
