China was not interested in trading with western countries because they needed the supplies and food for their own countries. Such things as wheat, and rice were their main exports, needed for food and silk.

China had goods like pepper and all those kind of things. In that time you could pay taxes or buy a house with pepper so pepper was really special!
When they trade with China and trade for pepper then the people would get rich

∙ 12y agoThey wanted to avoid the Western influence in their society. After the Opium Warswith the English it is not astonishing. They had the whole country enslaved to opium in order to be able to do their business. Apart from that the Chinese have always been real paranoiac in this aspect. They refused trading with Genghis Khan on a friendly base and thus provoked him to invade their country.
The Gai-Jin or foreign devil was never welcome in China and it is a fact that most of those who did enter their country brought them very little and mostly tried to exploit them one way or another.

For example, if china was to trade with a country who belived in the culture of not respecting their elderly then china would believe that culture has made an impression on their country that already has "beneficial laws" for their country.so as you see china just wanted to stay the same so they couldlive the way THEIR laws intended.
