IV bags are made of flexible plastic materials; whereas, IV bottles are usually made of glass. Glass is not able to flex and therefore will not collapse. The medication administration set used to drain the medication from the bag or bottle to patient are designed with a small air intake port. This port is placed next to spike were the set enters the bag or bottle. It is important to open this port if administering medication from a bottle so that air can enter the container and replace to volume of liquid medication which is flowing to the patient. The port remains closed when IV bags are used because the bag can deflate as the volume is drained.
