The Gaza Strip is currently ruled by Hamas which is dead-set on opposing the Israeli Right to Exist. It has constantly bombarded Israeli cities close to it and recently expanded its firing range to the Israeli financial capital of Tel Aviv. The Israelis have surrounded Gaza with a blockade and armed border to prevent the influx of the very missiles used to perpetrate these attacks. This has caused a humanitarian problem in Gaza, resulting in increased fury to attack the Israelis. This vicious cycle self-perpetuates.

It depends on your terms. If you are referring to the West Bank and the Gaza Strip cumulatively as Palestine and the 1949 borders of the State of Israel as Israel, then Israel is 3x larger than Palestine. If you are referring to the British Mandate of Palestine, then the State of Israel according to 1949 borders is smaller than Palestine. If you are comparing the current areas under Israeli control to the area of Mandatory Palestine, they are roughly equal. (The gain in the Golan Heights is more-or-less offset by the loss of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank Zone A regions.)
What does Zionism have to do with the current state of affairs in the Gaza strip?
In a very distant way, Zionism is responsible for the existence of Israel. Without Israel, there would be a unitary Arab State in Palestine and therefore no blockade problem in Gaza. However, Zionism has no direct connection to the blockade of the Gaza Strip.

The Palestinians do have independent government in the Gaza Strip. It is not recognized since it is a rogue state that refuses to acknowledge or follow past treaties.

If the Gaza Strip was more willing to behave peacefully with its neighbors (both Egypt and Israel), there would be fewer conflicts in the Gaza Strip. (Even Palestinians are getting tired of Hamas as can be seen in the parody of the "Thank You Hamas" videos.)
