Most ants do not fly. However, in may ant species the newly hatched queen ants (and their male counterparts) emerge with functional wings which they use to disperse and mate. Once mated they then normally shed their wings prior to establishing a new nest/colony. Thus they fly to disperse their species into new territories.
Ants will climb trees because they may have a nest built there or they may be scoping out a place to build a nest.
