Depending on the size of the tour, they need:

  • Transport - This is mainly a tour bus when doing large tours, to save costs in terms of accommodation, as most tour buses have beds, and an electricity supply for small meals (literally, enough to power a kettle and a microwave)
  • transportation for equipment - This is mostly just for Backline (Amps, drum kit, etc.) as the venue will have PA systems built in, so they don't need to take them. This is also used to transport the instruments. Lorries do this job quite well, so they will usually have 2 lorries for all their equipment.
  • Spare instruments - This will be needed, as they will get through a number of strings, sticks, etc throughout the tour.
  • Road Crew. Basically, these are the guys that set up before the show. They normally take their own sound crew with them to the venues as well, and some take their manager with them on the tour bus.
  • Security. Most big bands will bring their own security to the venue, mostly to prevent stage divers, thieves, attackers, although the venue might provide this themselves.
