Because children's bones are softer and therefore will bend further before actually breaking
A child suffers a greenstick fracture because young children have soft bones in which they bend and partially break. The reason why an adult wouldn't suffer a greenstick fracture is because bones in the human skeletal system become calcified (harder) and more breakable with age.
When you are a child, all of the body's bones are new, so are more soft and durable. Adult's bones are old, so are more brittle and stiff.

When people grow older, it becomes harder for them to absorb calcium, which is one of the main components of bone marrow, so older people's bones are more brittle and break more easily.

Why would a fracture at the epiphysis be important in a child or a young adult?

The epiphysis, commonly known as the growth plate, is the site of long-bone growth in a child or young adult. If a growing person has a fracture at this site, growth of bone length may be affected on that side, creating uneven limb length.

Which is the name for a broken bone?

A broken bone is often called a "fracture" or "bone fracture". Some examples from the Wikipedia entry on bone fracture. * Complete Fracture- A fracture in which bone fragments separate completely. * Incomplete Fracture- A fracture in which the bone fragments are still partially joined. * Linear Fracture- A fracture that is parallel to the bone's long axis. * Transverse Fracture- A fracture that is at a right angle to the bone's long axis. * Oblique Fracture- A fracture that is diagonal to a bone's long axis. * Compression Fracture-A fracture that usually occurs in the vertebrae. * Spiral Fracture- A fracture where at least one part of the bone has been twisted. * Comminuted Fracture- A fracture causing many fragments. * Compacted Fracture- A fracture caused when bone fragments are driven into each other * Open Fracture- A fracture when the bone reaches the skin * Bug fracture- A fracture when the bone is in place, but the fracture has the appearance of a crushed insect.

Can an adult have a buckle fracture?

Although buckle fractures are a common type of pediatric fracture, an adult can get a buckle fracture as well. Basically, a buckle fracture occurs when there is plastic deformation (basically bending leading to compression of the cortex, or outer surface of bone) and a complete fracture of the cortex in the transition area of metaphyseal bone to diaphyseal bone (area where woven bone meets up with sheet-like bone). This happens more often in children because their bones are not mature and the transition area is not as strong as that of a skeletally mature adult. However, the biomechanic characteristics of the transition region can predispose to local failure with a resultant buckle or torus fracture, rather than a transverse fracture, in either children or adults. It just happens much more commonly in kiddos!

What type of fracture shatters the bone?

A fracture that shatters the bone is called a comminuted fracture. A direct impact can shatter bone into several fragments or pieces. This type of fracture is likely to occur in a road traffic accident.
