There's a difference between the once and for all sacrifice that cleanses believers from all sin, and the remedy for sin in the daily life of a believer. Jesus' death on the cross paid the penalty for all our sin(s). Which means they are all forgiven in the judicial sense. However, in our day-to-day walk with the Lord, it is important to confess the sins we commit to maintain our fellowship with God. Sin will always separate us from God, even those sins committed after salvation. It's a relationship thing in that when we sin we lose that close contact with God. The solution is confession on our part and forgiveness on His part. For the Christian it's a matter of obeying the scripture in 1 John 1:9 which tells us to confess our sins and God will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness through the blood of Christ.

A believer's forgiveness of others acknowledges that only God is perfect. I, as a believer, am imperfect, as are my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. At times they will not live up to biblical commands because of our struggle with the sin nature, and they will disappoint me. I must forgive them just as God has forgiven them and forgiven me. When I forgive, I am following Christ as the supreme example of forgiveness, love, mercy, grace, and compassion.

Because that's what we're all supposed to do; we're supposed to follow the example that God left for us. Even though His own people ridiculed, abused and crucified him on the cross, He still forgave them. And if God can forgive those people for doing all that to Him, I think we can follow His example by forgiving the people who have done us wrong as well, don't you agree?

Because each of us needs forgiveness:
