Being closer to the equator means a smaller difference in length of days between summer and winter. In places farther from the equator winter means shorter days. Daylight savings pushes the sunrise to a time where people must be up to work. In tropical climates the day doesn't get shorter, so noone needs to save its light!

The length of daylight is consistent near the equator. Changing the clocks would offer no benefit.

In areas close to the equator the time of the sunrise does not change enough through the year to take advantage of daylight saving time.

The time from sunrise to sunset doesn't change along the equator. It remains just over 12 hours all year.
